More on the Tonga language
Tonga is one of the most spoken languages in Zambia spoken mainly by the Tonga people of Southern and Western provinces of Zambia and also in the norther part of Zimbabwe by an estimated 1.5 million people collectively. Tonga people are often referred to as ‘Ba Tonga’ and the language itself is also known as ‘Chi Tonga’. The Tonga language has two distinctively dialects one of them being the ‘Valley Tonga’ associated with the Zambezi valley and southern areas of Zambia whilst the other dialect known as Plateau Tonga is commonly spoken by the Tonga people of Monze district and the northern areas of Zambia.
